With the addition of over 14 new members this past year, the Fort Severn Chapter has begun new friendships and enjoyed many DAR activities together.
The 2009 year began with honoring Isabel Shipley Cunningham as our Outstanding Woman in American History. Mrs. Cunningham has been instrumental in documenting the history of Pasadena, Maryland through several books authored by her.
The Fort Severn Chapter was also pleased to provide the honor of the DAR Outstanding Volunteer Award to William Weitzell for his life-long service for the Earleigh Heights Fire Company. Mr. Weitzell also obtained the first place Volunteer Award at the Maryland State Level, and the third place Volunteer Award at the District Level for volunteerism. We truly thank Mr. Weitzell for his dedication and support for the fire company.
Finally, the Fort Severn Chapter provided two ROTC awards to deserving students at Laurel High School - Cadets Tia Gilmore and Joseph Dykes.
Donations that the chapter has provided throughout the year include donations for the "Trees for Fort Frederick" Program, the DAR Schools through the Labels for Education program, donations to area Verteran's Hospitals, and a very generous chapter member book donation to the DAR Library.
Chapter members also had the opportunity to enjoy great comraderie in patriotic and historical activities such as the Joint Chapter Ladies Tea celebrating Constitution Week, the annual Spring Field trip to the home of Merriweather Post - Hillwood Museum and finally a fun filled Flag Day picnic held on the Magothy River.
The 2009 - 2010 year will provide the Fort Severn Chapter many more wonderful activities for both chapter members as well as welcomed guests to enjoy. We look forward to seeing you soon!
